So, why do we color maps?  Coloring develops fine motor skills which improves penmanship.  The act of carefully staying in the lines helps to cement the shape of the county in the child’s mind.

Other Map Activity Ideas for Your Homeschool

Use other media.  Drawing the rivers with glitter glue is easy and fun.  A little glue sprinkled with sand or brown sugar makes a desert.  Chocolate chips make a great mountain!

Make a map puzzle.  Print the map on cardstock, then cut out the shapes.  Have fun putting them back together as a puzzle.  Add an element of competition by timing yourselves.  Compete to beat each other, or for a personal best week after week.

Make a salt dough map.  These need to be formed on cardboard and are a great, tactile way to get familiar with the topography of the area or country you are studying.

Or, take it one step further by making a collage!  Cut the map into pieces by country, then use them as templates to cut the shape from a picture that represents that country.  You could use categories, such as foods, natural resources, people and dress, beautiful landmarks,  or natural wonders.  Glues the shapes back together for a map you can hang up and show off!

Play the geography song, while pointing to the countries.  Using little pointers, like barbecue skewers, can be used on individual maps in a group. Using a pointer on a wall-mounted map makes kids feel official!  Or, go all out and draw the map with sidewalk chalk.  Dance from country to country with the music!

Have a great time, and share a picture if you have done something great with maps!
