St. Benedict moved to a cave in the mountains of Subiaco, Italy, living alone and devoting his life to God. He founded twelve communities for monks in Subiaco and later founded Monte Cassino. While Abbott at Monte Cassino, he drew up a rule of monastic life. The Rule of St. Benedict emphasizes prayer, work, simplicity, and hospitality. His feast day is July 11th.
