Math
- I don’t have anything clever specifically about the distributive property. Sometimes these math properties are tricky to make ‘fun.’ Anytime you get in a worksheet rut, where all you are doing is teaching and doing worksheets, take a break from paper and use dry-erase markers on your glass doors and windows. You’d be surprised how much more fun the distributive property is when it’s on glass! (Be sure to remind your little ones to never draw on the walls!)
Language Arts
- Homonyms can be a lot of fun. Print these homonym cards and play any one of these games with them:
- Matching: Turn them all over so the Catholic Schoolhouse logo is up, and take turns trying to find the matching homonyms.
- Let your students find the matching homonyms and challenge them to use both in a sentence. For example: On our family vacation I got to see the sea. I ate eight cookies and felt sick.
- A group game: Give each student one card. Tell them to hold their card up to their forehead with the homonym facing outward. Then tell them to find the student with the homonym that matches theirs. Once they find their match, each says a sentence correctly using their homonym.
Music
- Finish off your study on Sousa with this crossword puzzle on the Crayola website.
- While your students are working on their crossword puzzle, they can watch this musical about Sousa! It’s available on Amazon and is an amusing but historical (and musical) account of Sousa’s life.

History
- I found this great book called World War 2 for kids. It has a lot to offer: a basic explanation of how World War II started and how it progressed, actual accounts of World War 2 from people who lived through it, and 21 activities about World War II. It is certainly more than you can accomplish in one week, but you can choose what parts you on which you want to focus. As for the activities, there is an exercise in code-breaking, making your own rations kit, learning the physics behind dropping bombs, thinking about defense, and you can even review camouflage (we learned about that in week 2 science about reptiles!).

- Check out all of these printable coloring pages for World War II. I’ve found it can be difficult to get students to sit still while I read to them. Sometimes keeping their hands busy with something helps them sit still and even listen and comprehend better. Use these coloring pages and read to your students about WW2, or Roosevelt this week.
- Have any of you been making the US President’s lapbooks I shared with you in Tour 1: Week 6? Make sure you add Roosevelt this week! Even if you aren’t making the lapbook, you can spend some time looking at Roosevelt. One virtue you can teach your students is persistence. Roosevelt was confined to a wheelchair due to his battle with polio. Even though he had the setback of a crippling disease, he became the president during a critical period of our American History. Ask your students what challenges they face. How can they overcome these obstacles and be successful?
- There is plenty to teach about World War 2. Adapt the depth of your teaching to appropriately match what your students are able to absorb. Use this map worksheet to help. Even your youngest students can color in the map, while you explain how WW2 started.
- Did you know, The Sound of Music takes place during the beginning of World War 2? If it is a movie your family loves, this might be a good time to incorporate some history lessons into something they would be watching anyway.

Science
- The Magic Schoolbus Season 1 Episode 2, The Magic Schoolbus for Lunch, is all about the Digestive system. After you teach your students about the digestive system let them wind down with this cartoon!
